Visit Todi
The medieval town of Todi

Todi is a popular tourist destination set in the beautiful hills of Umbria which is known as the green heart of Italy. Todi’s historical centre dates back to pre-Roman times and was a border town on the river Tiber, which divided Umbria from Etruria before the Romans came and expanded the town with stronger fortifications that are still evident today. The area is full of luxury villas, farms and guesthouses to suit everyone’s pocket. Italians flock to Umbria for its food, beautiful countryside and historical heritage.
Visit Todi
Todi is one of Umbria's best-kept secrets. Smaller and quieter than Orvieto, it attracts far fewer tour groups and retains an authentically Italian atmosphere that larger, more famous towns can struggle to preserve. Perched on a hilltop above the Tiber valley, it is a genuinely beautiful place to spend time — and an ideal base for exploring the wider region by car.
The town has a good selection of bars, cafés and restaurants ranging from simple and local to more refined, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with agriturismi, villas and B&Bs, many with pools — highly recommended for longer summer stays. Accommodation in and around Todi ranges from inexpensive to comfortably upmarket, suiting a wide range of budgets and travel styles.
A town that comes alive in summer
Despite its small size, Todi has a rich and varied events calendar throughout the summer months. Recent highlights have included the European Festival of Music, archery tournaments, a theatre festival, opera and other musical events, the lively Torneo dei Rioni — a five-a-side football competition between the town's historic districts — and a series of religious festivals that spill out into the streets with markets and community celebrations. There is nearly always something happening.
For practical visitors, a seasonal shuttle service runs from the parking areas along the town walls up to the historic centre, making it easy to arrive by car and explore on foot.
Getting to Todi
By air — regional
The closest airport is Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi – Umbria International Airport (PEG), approximately 36 km (22 miles) north of Todi, with direct flights from London and several other European cities. Car hire and taxis are available at the airport; note that there is no direct public transport link between Perugia airport and Todi itself.
By air — international
Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO), approximately 110 km (68 miles) away, is the main arrival point for long-haul flights from the US, Australia and beyond. From Fiumicino, Todi is reachable by:
Rental car — the most flexible option, and recommended for exploring Umbria
Coach — direct services run to Todi from Rome
Train + onward connection — take the train from Fiumicino into central Rome, then a coach to Todi or a train to Terni (approximately 40 minutes from Todi by car), with a bus or taxi for the final leg
A note on arrival
All public transport — coaches and buses — arrives at Pian di Porto, approximately 5 km from the historic centre. A local link bus connects Pian di Porto to the town centre during weekday daytime hours, and taxis are available.
